As many know, America is known as the land of equal opportunity. This is far from the case however when considering its past and the grueling effects of it to this day. Minority groups have always had a tough time in this country when it comes to housing, jobs, and many other factors. Something in particular that as taken strides to improve is the diversity of workplaces in cities that are known as segregated. The reason the cites face this stigma of being dangerous or unsafe is because of the lack of white people that live in these areas. So how can a place be so diverse in the workforce but so segregated in the housing department? The reason for this is because of the cycle that started that white neighborhoods get more funding than non-white neighborhoods and with the inclusion of other races, that could jeopardize the majority of the funding received. Something that makes books great and remembered is the ability for them to be multi-dimensional. Books that can utilize their nature of being read multiple times with a different theme in your head are the books that are kept around and analyzed deeper with much more detail. These books also have the tendency to stand the test of time and amuse all readers reading the book. A prolific example of this is The Great Gatsby as it has remained a staple in the education system for decades even though it was written in 1924 as opposed to other books deeply ingrained in the system which were written in 1953 and 1960: Lord of The Flies, To Kill a Mockingbird. In The Great Gatsby, Nick has a peculiar way of describing Gatsby by making his description of him somewhat ambiguous. I feel that this is foreshadowing later into the book in some ways because of how little we know about Gatsby. The ambiguous description of Gatsby through Nick's eyes was, "[he] represented everything for which I have an unaffected scorn." After reading this, I became more interested in Gatsby as throughout the reading, some of what Gatsby says and does is in contradiction to where he lives and what he does. After our discussion in class about him living in the West Egg, this can imply that Gatsby did not inherit his wealth from his family because the city that represents old money, East Egg, is the place that he should be tied to if that is the case. As a child I learned that I must become powerful enough to deal with the world itself by becoming wealthy, the same principal and reason my father dies, to protect his land, which made his money. This is something that makes a man powerful and this motivates me and drives me to stay chasing the bag even when I have enough to make a living. I chase bags in sense of money but I also chase bags that are green with what I believe to be gold which would make me even more rich and happy even when I must have it from my own sister. With this dedication, money and respect was easy to obtain even as a black man however my mind set was like a glass cannon that I snapped at everyone who I disliked. This is why I value money because I do not have to worry about emotions of others and that money is tangible.
