When you see a true atrocity unfold on the news, how do you react? You may be called to action, maybe feel motivated to do something about it or maybe even feel pressured to make a change. Or if you are like me, you will feel weird and confused on how you do not feel the same type of empathy as others. As a person who is up to date on the latest events since 8th grade, I have seen so many violent images and all the media's takes weather it be from the radical fan or the president speaking on an issue. I feel as if I have been desensitized about what is going on in the world. I know how I am supposed to feel and I also do what I am supposed to do but I do not feel what I am supposed to feel. I feel like this is a real issue because I remember the time I first heard of these tragedies and having emotion. I feel like letting children see violent images growing up will desensitize them to images and that we should be more mindful to the audience. With that being said I also believe that we should still view these violent images because it will bring everyone back to reality of what is going on in the world.
In The Great Gatsby, Nick has a peculiar way of describing Gatsby by making his description of him somewhat ambiguous. I feel that this is foreshadowing later into the book in some ways because of how little we know about Gatsby. The ambiguous description of Gatsby through Nick's eyes was, "[he] represented everything for which I have an unaffected scorn." After reading this, I became more interested in Gatsby as throughout the reading, some of what Gatsby says and does is in contradiction to where he lives and what he does. After our discussion in class about him living in the West Egg, this can imply that Gatsby did not inherit his wealth from his family because the city that represents old money, East Egg, is the place that he should be tied to if that is the case. With the lie that he brought up, it can also be assumed that there are other lies that are in place to keep his character mysterious. Because of the reason the Gatsby wants to hide how he obtained his we...
I like how you show the dilemma between keeping people conscious of the world around them, but also them becoming desensitized. I agree that the people should always be aware of reality and thus, violent images should be shown, but I also think that people becoming more desensitized is a good thing. When entire nations are over reactive to situations, they often enact policies which they will later regret. And the reason entire nations get over reactive is because the people themselves are a little too sensitive, so they vote for policies which may seem appropriate in the moment and heat of things, but later on may be terrible decisions. When people are desensitized, they do not immediately jump to radical decisions, rather, they take time to think out the appropriate course of action while still feeling the urge to do something.
