As a child I learned that I must become powerful enough to deal with the world itself by becoming wealthy, the same principal and reason my father dies, to protect his land, which made his money. This is something that makes a man powerful and this motivates me and drives me to stay chasing the bag even when I have enough to make a living. I chase bags in sense of money but I also chase bags that are green with what I believe to be gold which would make me even more rich and happy even when I must have it from my own sister. With this dedication, money and respect was easy to obtain even as a black man however my mind set was like a glass cannon that I snapped at everyone who I disliked. This is why I value money because I do not have to worry about emotions of others and that money is tangible. As I become more wealthy I gave less value to my loved ones especially my family as I became used to not needing their support or love in my life. The only reason I wanted Milkman around was so that he could help me take care of my large business that I have come to depend on over the years. My childhood was a big part in the development of my ego as I grew jealous of the people that did not love me more than others such as Ruth.
In The Great Gatsby, Nick has a peculiar way of describing Gatsby by making his description of him somewhat ambiguous. I feel that this is foreshadowing later into the book in some ways because of how little we know about Gatsby. The ambiguous description of Gatsby through Nick's eyes was, "[he] represented everything for which I have an unaffected scorn." After reading this, I became more interested in Gatsby as throughout the reading, some of what Gatsby says and does is in contradiction to where he lives and what he does. After our discussion in class about him living in the West Egg, this can imply that Gatsby did not inherit his wealth from his family because the city that represents old money, East Egg, is the place that he should be tied to if that is the case. With the lie that he brought up, it can also be assumed that there are other lies that are in place to keep his character mysterious. I really like how you gave Macon a reason for his greed for more wealth. While reading the book it was very one dimensional due to the fact that we didn't really know all that much about Macon before his father got killed, but your writing really shows where he got his motivation from.
