In the book, The Nickel Boys, various themes are explored however one strikes out to me. It is about Elwood and his dignity throughout the whole book. At the beginning of the book, Marconi hires Elwood to work at his store and while working one day, Elwood stops shoplifters the same age as him. Elwood then demands them to return the items. This is different from Marconi's idea that stoping kids will be bad for his business. However, Elwood couldn't just stand by and watch thievery happen. As a result of preserving his dignity, however, he is then jumped and beaten up. This sets up the rest of the book to show that there is a sacrifice that comes with protecting your dignity and the same idea is what happened at the Civil Rights rally. This one even I feel is serving as foreshadowing the rest of the book and all the consequences that happen as a result of acting on his moral compass is a result of his strong moral compass that leads him to do the correct thing. Because of this, it gives the perception that Elwood is out to get exploited by the world and taken for granted whether it be the dish drying example to getting into a stolen car without his knowledge.
